Thomas’s expertise lies in the use of small molecule mass spectrometry to determine chemicals found in the environment (especially in aquatic wildlife) and to determine biomarkers and pathways associated with adverse effects in exposed organisms. 

At Brunel, he works in three main areas concerned with chemical pollution. These include determining chemicals (and mixtures) in the environment, improving mechanistic understanding of cause-effect relationships and, lastly, developing and applying AI to support environmental risk assessment, replace animal testing and improve interpretation of complex datasets to better understand animal health.
