Answer

The capillary used with capillary isoelectric focusing (cIEF) can be rinsed completely with water, and water is traditionally used for rinsing in all other cIEF assays, aside from SCIEX's cIEF shutdown method. The gel rinse was introduced to keep the capillary conditioned easily for next day use without having to re-condition the capillary completely. Overall, the capillary can still be left in water, but it may need an additional conditioning run the next day depending on the sample.
