Soil and biota

The sensitivity, selectivity and specificity of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) enables you to detect, verify and quantify semi-volatile polar organic chemical contaminants in soil so you can meet regulatory requirements.

Soil contamination can be caused by industrial waste discharge, sewage discharge, agrichemical applications, oil and fuel dumping and leaching of waste from landfills, among other sources. Common soil contaminants can range from pesticides, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and petroleum-based and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These contaminants ultimately threaten the environment, plant and animal health, our food supply, general public health and safe and sustainable farming.

For these reasons, it is important to test for and monitor soil contaminants to properly evaluate the exposure of humans, plants and animals.

LC-MS/MS: Protecting the health of our soil and the animals and plants that call it home

Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) offers many advantages for trace-level analysis of medium-polar, polar and ionic compounds in soil samples. Using LC-MS/MS for soil testing helps enable:

  • The identification and quantification of thousands of soil contaminant compounds down to the ng/L level
  • Robustness and selectivity for the analysis of complex soil, biota and biosolid matrices
  • A reduction in the need for compound derivatization
