Answer

Capillaries can get blocked and will need to be replaced from time to time to maintain high quality spray from an electrospray ionization (ESI) probe. Instructions are provided in this link here for removing an ESI probe and changing the capillary on a SCIEX mass spectrometer.

The capillary may need to be replaced regularly, especially if salt from mobile phases accumulates in the probe and starts blocking the flow path.
